    Chatspeak as symbols

    VZ exits Maine

This is a little old, but I found it quite interesting:
    An amusing exercise

It is a discussion thread over at Typophile about what chat shorthand (lol, wtf, rofl) might look like as symbols, much as ‘at’ has ‘@’, or ‘and’ has ‘&’. Though most chat shorthands are acronyms instead of single words, it is still a very neat topic with some great ideas. I prefer the one pictured to the right of this post for LOL, submitted by gmckenzi.

I also have been pondering a discussion I had with someone at work about how we do not *usually* laugh literally “out loud” when we type lol, or actually fall out of our chairs when we type rofl (how would we type it if we were?), although there have been times when it has happened. Instead, maybe we should use an alternative, and leave LOL for more hilarious outbursts. You could just take the acronym of out, producing LIL (Laughing In Loud) but that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, plus it looks like an abbreviation of little.

Perhaps LI or LIW, for Laughing InWardly, would work. Or we could spark a whole new term like TVF (Thats Very Funny) as in “That’s very funny, a fly marrying a bumble bee… I TOLD YOU I’D SHOOT! BUT YOU DIDN’T BELIEVE ME! WHYYYYYYYY DIDN’T YOU BELIEVE ME?!?!“. God I love that show.

In lieu of LOL, I tend to use “heh” when I find something funny, and “heheheheh” when it is funnier still. Note that I mean this as “heh heh heh”, as in a chuckle, as opposed to “he he he”, a feminine giggle…

So what do you all think? Do you like LIL, LIW, TVF? Create your own and post them here. I would love to hear your input on this!

PS: *bonus points for a symbolic for “OMG WTF BBQ” that is not just letters run together.

i’ve just gotten used to typing ‘haha’ and if i am really laughing just typing it longer or with exclamation or something “hahahaha that fuckin rocks!”

its a really good point that people always type and say they are laughing and are really just laughing on the inside … (0_0)
which is awesome when typing to someone and watching each other on a webcam, totally funny the amount of internalization, so you might be having a crazy conversation and … (0_0) [ ] / [ ](0_0)
thats just funny haha (not LOL funny)

    • Doody 3:26 am on 2/4/2007 Permalink

I kind of do the same thing. I usually use “haha” when laughing on the inside. When I am litterally laughing though I will make it more extreme by lengthening it to like “hahahahaha” or if I am really laughing hard HAHAHAHAHA!

    • Nyrath the nearly wise 7:52 pm on 2/16/2007 Permalink

      I use “Heh” as well.
Your aunt Patti really enjoys when she hears your laugh in person, she thinks it sounds so delightfully evil.

    Season on Impact

    Season Shot

Okay… This is too hilarious to not post:

Season Shot, the environmentally friendly bird shot that kills with flavor.

Here’s the gist: It’s a rifle round that has a tightly-packed mass of seasonings taking the place of lead shot. When you cook the bird, the seasonings melt into it, and if you miss, its biodegradable, so its better for the environment. The things people think up are just wild sometimes.

It hasn’t come out yet, but it has a fledgling site, albeit one that skews slightly to the left in firefox *tisk tisk*, and the concept is really great, if your a hunter that is. I used to hunt birds many years ago, now I just go fishing with Amme. At least if you do hunt with this and are a bad shot, you’re helping the environment.

    I’m not a look-alike!

Bizarre, no… Freaky. Freaky is the word I’d use to describe this project.

I’ve always been a truly firm believer that everyone has an evil (or nice) twin, or maybe just a doppleganger. Whatever their disposition, this photography project by francois brunelle definately confirms my suspicions. The cool thing is that these are only some US/UK look-alikes. Imagine how many there are in the whole world!

Go to his website (http://www.francoisbrunelle.com) to see these freaky black and white photos. You can also read up on some of the details behind these coincidences… if you can call them that *cough*boysfrombrazil*cough*.

I don’t recall how I came across Moo — It must have been either Nyrath or del.icio.us/popular — but in any case, come across it I did.

Do you like business cards? Meh, boring right? Do you love Flickr and your photos? Sure, we all do. Why doesn’t someone combine the two? Moo did. They’re a wonderful little printing company that currently offers a product called MiniCards.

    The Megapixel Myth

Design251 has a great little article that dispells the “megapixel myth” that you can make a true photo quality 16″ x 20″ print with an 8 or even 10 megapixel “professional” digital camera. You in fact need about a 27 Mpx (megapixel) camera for a true analog quality print of that size, so don’t get caught up in the megapixel hype unless Nikon starts offering a consumer 30 Mpx model.

PS: keep in mind that more Mpx will get you closer to an analog quality, but it is nowhere near close at present.

    90s Saturday Morning Line-up

Remember getting up early on Saturday morning because you actually wanted to? Many of us did this as kids for one simple reason… Television!

I remember waking up early to catch all of my favorite shows, but didn’t actually remember the titles of many of them. At least not until I stumbled onto this little gem:
Saturday Morning TV Schedules of the 90s.

This site has a lineup of Saturday Moring Shows for NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX, grouped by year (Spring/Fall), and it’s sure to bring back memories. I think I started watching TV around 1988, so if you’re older than I am, be sure to check out 80s Saturdays and 70s Saturdays.

Just because this is my blog, here are my top 5 favorite Saturday morning shows:

    1. Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies
    2. Scooby Doo
    3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    4. Garfield and Friends
    5. Reboot (first completely computer animated TV series, and well done at that!)

I personally believe things started going south around 1995, for Saturday Morning shows anyway, and I not gett all my cartoonage on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. What were you’re favorites?

    • B 9:34 pm on 4/6/2006 Permalink

      WOOO!
      Reboot!
      fuckin alright!
      I miss that.

      “I Come From the Net,
      through Systems, Peoples and cities…
      to this place, MAINFRAME,
      My format, Guardian,
      to mend and defend,
to protect my new found friends,
      their hopes and dreams,
      to defend them from…
      Their enemies”

    • Doody 11:14 pm on 4/6/2006 Permalink

      Definitely agree with you on:
      Garfield and Friends
      Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

But another one that I really liked was Beekman’s World
It wasn’t a cartoon but it was cool.

    • Jalbey 7:59 am on 4/12/2006 Permalink

Beekman’s world! Awesome, I am not alone, I also loved Bill Nye, great shows. I watched some CBC stuff as well like Mr. Dressup.

Put AIM, MSN, and Yahoo on Google Talk!

I got a newsletter from BigBlueBall last month about putting AIM, MSN, and Yahoo on Google Talk. It sounded cool as heck, but I hadn’t gotten around to trying it until today.

It was a really straight-forward process, and only took about 10 minutes. You should definately try it out, because its just plain rad to chat with everyone via Google Talk!

BTW: Even if you don’t do this, you should consider using Google Talk anyway, especially if you want free long-distance calls via computer (think Skype, but easier and googley).

    • Jalbey 9:53 am on 1/7/2006 Permalink

Time? What is time, but what really is “free” time? Let’s ponder this question shall we.

Dictionary.com gives us the following definition for time. Time is: “A nonspatial continuum in which events occur in apparently irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future.”

Let’s see, “A nonspatial continuum”, hmm that sounds like there is no true way to measure time, and also it will never end. A good thing for those of us that just need more time.

“Irreversible succession”, does that mean I can’t go back and stop myself from calling my boss a miserable furry ball chin prick at the last company picnic? Guess it also means that I won’t be able to stop myself from doing it again (only with a different body part in question) this year.

My point here tonight Ladies and Gentlemen is that time is never really free (direct yourself to the company picnic for example) and we all will always have more time, sleep well and good night.

    • Doody 12:22 am on 1/9/2006 Permalink

I just realized that at the end, where it says Loiter and “This film not yet rated.” It should say Loiter “This film does not exist.”

    Dispelling the Myths of Absinthe

Even the ocassional imbiber should have heard of Absinthe. Sometimes called the “green fairy”, it is a 140-proof green liqueur made from fennel, anise, and wormwood leaves. Absinthe dates back to 1792, but has been banned in the US and many other countries for almost 100 years.

Known for its alleged ability to induce a unique state of mind, appart from a regular alcoholic intoxication, absinthe has been consumed by such writers and artists as Baudelaire, Picasso Rimbaud, Toulouse-Lautrec, Oscar Wilde, and Van Gogh.

The main reason for banning absinthe was the fact that it contains an ingredient called thujon, which is poisionous. The irony of this is, drumroll please… all alcohol is a poison!!! However, that is not the point. The point is that it has never been proven that there is enough thujon in absinthe to hurt you at all, despite the terrible accusations that have plagued it for so long…

Haha, thats funny because one of my professors is originally from either Poland or Germany (I can’t remember which off the top of my head). He is a big connoisseur of alcohols. He was talking to us one day about Absinthe in Europe. Aparently they keep huge stocks of that stuff in stores over there because American tourists go nuts for that stuff because its 140 proof.

    • euicho 4:42 pm on 11/15/2005 Permalink

Wow, if they just want high-proof, they have a couple US-legal options:
      Bacardi 151 (151 proof)
Everclear [190 proof (can't buy in Maine)]
there must be others but I am no expert. Hell, I don’t even rember what beer tastes like!

    • evan 2:26 am on 12/22/2005 Permalink

yeah here’s the thing about absinthe, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. and yeah the trip is better than the alcoholic intoxication. if you drink absinthe to get hammered you’ll be sorry. if instead you rip a shot or 3 and wait like 10 minutes or 1. in between shots you’ll be tripping “sack” in no time. peace out all my straight edge homies who read this, hope the edge is treating you well. oh and if you aren’t straight edge, smoke pot.

ah replace those sticky notes with the hipster pda! Its just notecards held together with a ring or butterfly clip. I use mine constantly to write down notes and stuff. I have a “To Do” card, a “To Get” card, and some reference cards with useful info, plus about 15 other blank cards in the back. When i fill up a To Do card, and cross everything off as done, I throw it away and start a new one. I call mine a hipster pda micro because I use these tiny cards:

from MindBinders. They are only about a third the size of regular notecards and have a small footprint in my pocket. For a pen I have this amazing lil puppy: http://www.zebrapen.com/ball-tele.html

read all about the hipster PDA idea from its source at 43Folders.com

Wow what a good idea. I am gonna sign up for that as soon as I have the time.

Rioting in France Reaches New High

The people of France are scared.

Rioting broke out in France’s suburbs 11 days ago, and is still going strong, spreading to at least 300 towns. Gangs of people are throwing Molotov cocktails into shops and commercial buildings, setting dumpsters on fire, as well as cars: 250, then 315, 500, and now, tonight, it has reached new heights with a total of 1400 cars set ablaze, and the injury of 30 policemen.

Why? Why are these people destroying their towns? Some blame it on “civil unrest”. Some on blame it on a generation of immigrant’s children feeling a lack of identity. I have a better name for it:
    Zombies.

    The Plague Swarms through WoW

Not to make light of disease, but this is quite humorous:

via: Nyrath > MetaFilter > Wonderland > shacknews
Heres the skinny: Blizzard adds in a new instance: Zul’Gurub. Inside is the god of blood, Hakkar. Well, when you fight him he has a debuff called Corrputed Blood. It does like 250-350 damage to palyers and affects nearby players. The amazing thing is SOME PLAYERS have brought this disease (and it is a disease) back to the towns, outside of the instance. It starts spreading amongst the genral population including npcs, who can out generate the damage. Some servers have gotten so bad that you can’t go into the major cities without getting the plague (and anyone less than like level 50 nearly immediately die).
GM’s even tried quarantining players in certain areas, but the players kept escaping the quarentine and infect other players.

QDB is a database of amusing quotes taken out of context from IRC channels. I stumbled across it while reading Tim Yang’s 15 things you can do with RSS, which is now in a wiki with much more than 15 things.

Note that bash.org is a different site than QDB.us, which are damn near identical in appearance. They both were spawned from the QDB that resided on GeekIssues.org, however QDB.us and bash.org are not affiliated and do not share the same database. As of this post, qdb.us has 10579 quotes approved, 352 pending (10931 total); while bash.org has 18044 quotes approved; 14531 pending (32575 total). Though it is clear that bash has just short of 3x the quotes of qdb.us, quality takes precedence over quantity. QDB.us claims that “recently, many bash.org moderators have migrated to this site.” However, I do not know which site boasts the best content. The purpose of this post is to ignite your interest in the idea–meaning read whichever you want, or both–not to pursuade you to favor one over the other. Both have top quotes, latest additions, and random lists.

So why is an IRC quote database useful? Why should you go check it out? Entertainment, of course! Some of them are weird, some of them are involved, but most of them are hillarious!

To spark your curiosity, I’ll reproduce a couple of my favorite shorter ones here:

I got a Jeep full of girls (my daughter and her friends, about 4 more of them than should have actually fit into the vehicle, all 13 or 14 years old) pretty excited about a big, loud fart the other day. Or perhaps they were just trying to claw their way out. I had the button pressed that locks all the window controls. And my wife can belch with the best of men. But she’s not American (originally), so that might not count. Perhaps it means that foriegn women might still be interesting. If they have not been “westernized”.

      Hmm could be.

    • Jalbey 5:23 pm on 2/28/2005 Permalink

Nope don’t think that has to do with it, Megan and a girl here at work are very open with that stuff and neither was raised with brothers. Has to be something deeper…family environment, friends (ahem), just plain personality? I think we could take 2,000 years to analyze all the data that we would collect and still not crack this mystery; I think it’s time to call in Robert Stack!

    Evan’s Rant #2 : Boomers

    Boomers
    by: Evan

So bill green = money, that’s all I got written down. The back of my hand, “bill green =$$”. What the fuck does that mean? Well it means tripping balls on chocolate psychedelics is not the way to a woman’s heart. To be honest with you I knew it was bad news when he said “I got what your guy wants and a buncha chocolate hallucinogens”

    • euicho 2:27 pm on 2/12/2005 Permalink

Haha, I know, I said you were “like” a girl, meaning you’re out to have fun, not to escape reality. :)

    • KevinMichael Hamm 4:20 pm on 2/17/2005 Permalink

oh, I think he’s like a girl… but then, I think The Great Euchio is a girl waiting to happen as well. I love the little stories where people think, “Fuck! What was I thinking>!>” and then, softly, gently, in the back of their heads, a voice speaks with all the wisdom of the 200,000 years of human history and says, “Duh! You’re such a fuckstick.”

    • KevinMichael Hamm 4:21 pm on 2/17/2005 Permalink

minus the question mark typos, that was poetic and truly unintentional timing for that post, btw…

    • euicho 8:20 pm on 2/17/2005 Permalink

that was beautiful, and *very* hillariously timed!

    • ev 12:15 am on 2/21/2005 Permalink

yeah well tom is a girl, i know from experience.

    • ev 11:40 pm on 2/22/2005 Permalink

    BEWARE of ART

    Megaptera strigigena

BEWARE of ART’s Jen Gagne creates insect sculptures that are more dangerous, and far more intimidating, than the real ones. Funny thing is, they’re cute in a deadly I’ll-mess-you-up-man! sorta way.

    QC at the UD

I’ve been going to UrbanDictionary.com a lot lately. I oringinally had thought it was great, then thought it sucked because it had no quality control and people were either always posting non-slang or self-promoting/flaming each other, treating it like a 12 year old’s message board or some such nonsense.

Things are looking up, however, thanks to Urban Dictionary instituting a quality control program. The page shows you five definitions people have flagged as being fit for removal (an option next to every defitition on the site) and you select whether “it stays”, “it goes”, or you are unqualified to decide (“i don’t know”). There is no hassle of logging in, and it preserves the wiki-like feel of the site without letting immature adolescents run rampant like spammers, which is, of course, exactly what most of them are doing.
