Wow I have incredible writer’s block. I must have zero readers by now (thats “ling” in Cantonese) I could write about whats going on in my life, but that’s just as tough. I’ll try though.

copyright Peter Buehner, used with permission.

Lately I’ve just been working and finishing up classes. The mall on campus (long stretch of grass, not shopping mall) is once again the constant home of one of the many slacklines owned by those of us that love the discipline. I love having a break between classes and going out there to find that there is always a line set up. Sometimes one of us will put one up, go to class, and come back later, knowing that our friends will make sure nobody steals it while we’re gone. I’ve made some really cool friends through slacklining over the last few years. Amme hasn’t had a chance to do it since the beginning of the summer, but she’s gotten really good.

I’ve also started climbing again at the rock gym here on campus. Its free for students which is awesome, and I still fit my shoes so that’s a bonus. I can’t climb at the level I used to, but I still know how to move and not overexert myself. I’m making progress slowly. (More …)

Good to hear from you in the update. Glad to hear that things are going as smoothly as they can at this point. Good luck with your teeth, you are one of “the uninsured” that you keep hearing about on TV. How does it feel to be a talking point?

The Mojave Experiment is NOT a real experiment

I was going to write all about how Microsoft’s Mojave Experiment was not an experiment, but was rather more of the same marketing crap that Microsoft always does. It turns out, however, that Wil Shipley did it first and did it better. Hence: linkey linkey.

    Saying Goodbye

It’s so haaaaarrd, to say goodbyyyyyee, to yesterdaaaaayyyy… :(

In other news: iPhone 3G! FARK YEAH!

Oh, and for all you haters: Lowest price for a new Tom Tom GPS = $199.
Lowest price for a new iPhone with GPS (and phone, music, video, monkey ball, etc…) = $199. And yes, it will have turn by turn directions in the near future.

Gadget pr0n will follow once I get my invisible shield on it

Does AT&T have a 3G network in Maine yet? Also, do you find the 2.0 firmware update to be slower than that if the firmware on the original iPhone?

    • euicho 9:21 am on 8/15/2008 Permalink

Unfortunately the 3G network won’t be rolled out in Maine until the end of the year, but that’s fast approaching. I’ve used 3G on my way down to NJ and for about a week while there, and its blazing fast!

Yeah I have noticed some lag when using the keyboard that wasn’t there in the first iPhone, but that’s due to a bug in the 2.0 firmware (it’s happened to the old iPhones and iPod Touches too that upgraded to the 2.0 firmware) so that should be resolved with the next firmware release. Other than that I adore my new one though, I used the GPS constantly to get around NJ for my friends Jesse & Kristen’s wedding and it was a life saver (even though google maps was wrong a couple of times).

    Wow… This thing’s like, a journal!

Yeah this entry is way overdue, I put it off then my domain was suspended for a week while I waited to get paid. But its back so for historical purposes, this entry was supposed to go up around June 25th.

“English System MOTHER-[beep]: Do you speak it?”

What a great few days this has been. This past Friday I went up to Caribou for my nephew’s 1 year birthday. For the next 12 months he will be “1 year and N months”. When he is 1 year, 6 months, it shall not be said he is “18 months old”, or I will start punching people in the teeth. Why? Because one of my pet peeves is people counting a child’s age in months after they’ve reached the next higher increment (YEARS). I am not 1120 16ths of an inch tall, I’m 5 feet 10 inches. Your car doesn’t hold 192 cups of gasoline, it holds 12 gallons, etc. He’s 1 year old. He’s also 12 months old but you don’t say that out loud. Wow, rant. Where was I? (More …)

The Desktop – My New Layout

Well, I figured it was about time for a change. I’ve had the forest theme on here since I moved to the euicho.com domain, and frankly my website felt a little stale.

Although I haven’t blogged about them much, some of you may know I have a somewhat-secret love affair with moleskines that has lasted for a few years now. Nothing quite compares to the feeling of undoing that elastic band, opening up to a fresh page, and writing down anything that comes to mind. One day when I was sketching website layouts in in my large moleskine I stepped back and realized that I needed to change my P.O.V.

You do realize that I can’t read your site on the iPod touch or iPhone now, right? Kinda makes me crazy…

    • euicho 10:36 am on 6/28/2008 Permalink

Yeah, sorry about that, no scrollbar shows up, but if you use 2 fingers to scroll, it’ll scroll the entry text. Even though this isn’t a frame it treats it like one. Its really just a scrolling div.

The page loads fine and I can zoom and read fine on my iPhone though, so that should be working.

Anyway, I’m working on an iphone css as well so you can opt to read just the text, since the iPhone displays my rss feed as truncated even though it’s set to show the full text of the article.

    • euicho 11:59 am on 6/28/2008 Permalink

Scratch that, the new iphone theme is installed and iPhones AND iPod Touches should see it automatically. I’ll be tweaking it a bit to match up with this theme.

Thats awesome! I need to get a new deck myself. I didn’t know that you were thinking about getting one. Thats so awesome, we have to go out and ride sometime soon hopefully.

    • euicho 5:13 pm on 5/9/2008 Permalink

Yeah, I have been needing one, my blank deck is a few years old and the grind king trucks are ancient and worn out, as are the wheels and bearings… so yeah its a mess. The deck is actually the most pristine part of it.

At any rate, I got some money for my birthday to buy myself a gift and this was one of my big wants so I got it! So far I’m totally digging it. It has amazing pop and is the lightest setup I’ve even ridden. I could have made it even lighter with lighter trucks, but I didn’t care too much about lightness. I mostly wanted a rugged deck that was hi-tech instead of the usual maple-7 decks I’ve always ridden.

You are not subscribed to EDGE

For the past 3 days I’d not had EDGE access on my iPhone. Out of the blue I started getting the error message “Could not activate EDGE: You are not subscribed to EDGE“. I tried many things without success, but finally got it to work! In order to make the information more available, I’ve decided to document it here.

    Favorite Lyrics

    Juliet Simms

You know when you’re listening to a song and hear a particularly powerful lyric? That verse or phrase that really stirs you or give you goosebumps? Maybe it’s the words, or maybe it’s just the power with which the singer delivers it. I know I’ve a couple of those favorite lines, probably a lot more than a couple. At any rate, I’d love to hear lyrics that all of you readers (yeah all four of you) particularly love. I’ll start with a couple of mine I’ve run across just recently. Sometimes they don’t pertain to me personally in any way, sometimes they do, but they’re always powerful, beautiful, or tragic, and I love hearing them. For the full effect you really have to listen to the song however, so I’ll provide audiko.net links with them: (More …)

Kicking off TMWS Season 5 Old-School!

    Jason and Doody being crazy

Damn I’ve been busy. I’m taking 18 credits this semester in an attempt to finish up my history minor and get my second degree done with. I’ve been neglecting the Internet Scrabble Club, which is sad because I do enjoy my scrabble. I’m going to play some tonight though. I also haven’t been climbing in a VERY long time and that makes me quite sad, so I’ll be doing that more in the very near future. (More …)

    RDP, APs, JOBZ, and BMG

    AP map

Today I was 3 computers deep into remote desktop (RD to one computer, then use that one to get to another, etc). Navigate through that sort of setup long enough, and you start to question what is real, or at least what is actually the machine you are physically sitting in front of. Quite existential, that.

At any rate, on the drive to work today I was doing a little casual geo-wardriving with my new bluetooth GPS receiver and netstumbler and I came across 2 access points within about 100 yards of one another that I found very interesting. They had two distinct names that told me a lot about the persons that set them up. (More …)

    Happy New Year’s Day!

Happy New Year’s Day everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season — I know I certainly had a great one.

I had a great Christmas this year as usual. I really feel blessed this time of year when the family comes together and the cards all come in from relatives across the country. Mom flew up to see the baby and have Christmas with us, and I got to play and bond with baby Parker for a whole week. I was really glad to be able to see both Mom and Dad this year, and Amme and I had an all around great week with our families. I got some fantastic new toys this year, but I’m not the bragging type, so I’ll just say I am humbled by the generosity of all in my family (which includes Amme’s family). (More …)

    Small Orionid shower this Sunday

    Orion constellation

According to SPACE.com, a small Orionid meteor shower will hit its peak this Sunday morning (October 21st).

This will be a small (a couple dozen an hour) shower, but could be fun to watch if you bring some warm clothing and a thermos.

I’m definately going to set my cam up and see if I can snag a shot or two. I only got 1 Lyrid earlier this year and it was so faint it wasn’t worth posting. Perhaps I’ll have better luck this time, though my chances will be less. (More …)

    Medium Format Foray

I am a little sick today but I was feeling worse yesterday so perhaps I am getting better. It is the usual sore throat and icky overall feeling that makes you know tomorrow you are not going to want to get out of bed. I am not too concerned however, because it is the weekend now and it is pouring rain outside so I do not plan on taking photos unless things let up.

    north-east leaf color map

The wonderful folks at foliagenetwork.com say the leaves are not yet at their peak in my area, although they are very close. I agree with them that the trees are confused by these conflicting periods of very cold/warm weather we have been having. Some places the leaves are vibrant or falling off while 10 feet away they are still green as your neighbor’s lawn.

    Die Panzer-Fliegen

Its a slow day at the office today, but this is good. It gives us freedom to entrench ourselves and mount a riposte. Last night as I was preparing to depart from work, a very large fly appeared. I hit it dead on with a CD and when I lifted the CD, it just flew away. I followed it and repeated. It just brushed off my assault and flew away again! Thinking I must have missed I charged Kyle, who was working the night-shift, to dispatch my foe. (More …)

Welcome to the World: Parker Adams!

Finally, I’m an uncle! Congratulations to Lindsey and Andrew! Parker Adams was born yesterday evening (not sure of the exact time) but he weighs in at almost 10 lbs!

Lindsey went into labor yesterday around 12:20pm yesterday and after nearly 8 hours of labor they decided to go cesarean. They both did just fine and the baby is adorable. I only have one camera-phone photo as I couldn’t go up to caribou for the birth, but I’ll take tons of photos this weekend if I go up.

    The Maniacs Weekly Show

I’ve put this off until we got the show rolling again, and I think since this week marked the 3rd consecutive show since its resurrection, I’ve decided now is the perfect time to post.

If you’ll humor me, I’d like to give you a little glimps into the hectic and wild childhood I had. Back when Jalbey, Doody, Matty B. and I spent a ton of time hanging out at Jalb’s house, I believe circa 1998-99, Jalbey and Doody brought up the idea of doing a weekly internet radio show to us. As Doody says, “It started when Jalb and I actually got the idea from a bored night when we just spoke into a mic on his old stereo and played music and recorded it onto a tape, and we loved doing it.”

    • Doody 12:53 am on 6/13/2007 Permalink

Just a quick note to add a minor edit and stuff:
The Maniacs name was actually first chosen because we were all from the true heart of Maine (by heart I mean not just the coast which is what everyone thinks Maine is). In other words Maniacs is sometimes what Maine people are called.
Also, part of the reason it is released primarily as a podcast is we have not figured out a way to do it live just yet, but even if we ever are able to we would still release it as a podcast as well anyway because as Euicho said, it’s just cool that way.
We do enjoy doing it, and we really miss doing it together because being able to interact that way produces better chit-chat, but we really do enjoy doing it any way we can. And we are always happy to have new listeners.

    • Doody 1:03 am on 6/13/2007 Permalink

Edit to my comment above, I did actually read the article Euicho just added the Maine thing afterwards hehehe…

    Nephew on the Way
