Chew On This My Merry Men

As Mr. Martin, my mentor and art/history teacher at CHS would say, “Everything old is new again.”

“Naturally, the common people don’t want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy, or a facist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.”

    - Hermann Goering, Hitler’s Reich-Marshall, at the Nuremberg Trials after WWII-

“everything old is new again” are words to live by. For instance, if you had read George Orwell’s novel 1984, the actions of the current administration would scare the poo out of you.

Lots of 1950′s era science fiction novels are very educational in this respect. In Heinlein’s BETWEEN PLANETS, the protagonist’s uncle dies while in the custody of the secret police. He is told that his uncle died of a “heart failure.” Suddenly he remembers his old biology teacher saying that in the end *all* forms of death can be described as heart failure.

Even if it was due to being tortured to death.

Too too true. I just read 1984 last November. It hit me hard and too close to home.

    Wedding Bells in NYC??

There has been a steady evolution of the institution of marriage throughout history which belies the concept of a static traditional definition. Marriage, as it is understood today, is both a partnership of two loving equals who choose to commit themselves to each other and a State institution designed to promote stability for the couple and their children. The relationships of plaintiffs fit within this definition of marriage. Similar to opposite-sex couples, same-sex couples are entitled to the same fundamental right to follow their hearts and publicly commit to a lifetime partnership with the person of their choosing. The recognition that this fundamental right applies equally to same-sex couples cannot legitimately be said to harm anyone. …

A silver lining to every cloud

This editorial/essay by Will Gadd makes some excelent points. Ponder it for a bit. And don’t let the title fool you, we all hate what Bush has done.

Iraq is a mess. The idea of “winning” there is a waste of time, but nobody wants to admit the reality. Everybody says, “we can’t just pull out.” But that’s exactly what’s going to happen eventually, Kerry or Bush in office, it doesn’t matter. For reference, look up Afghanistan with the soviets, Vietnam with the US, India with the British, etc., this isn’t exactly an original movie, pay attention to some basic history. Better to have it happen under the same evil prick that started it…

    Grieving over our loss

…Anger: FUCK YOU, America. FUCK. YOU. You like 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians because of your false war? 8000 wounded American soldiers and 1100 dead in Iraq because of imperial hubris and incompetent post-war planning not enough to quench your desire for misguided vengeance? Great, well you’re gonna have a lot more blood on your hands. Don’t want gay marriage? Fanfuckintastic. You got your way. A lot of good it’s gonna do when you can’t afford your prescription drugs, your unemployment benefits have run out, and your kid’s fucking school is overcrowded. And don’t think for a fucking second that “tort reform” is going to make a difference, because it won’t. Global warming is real, motherfuckers, and you just sealed the deal. Balanced budget? Ha. And when the Bush Supreme Court makes abortion illegal again, and thousands of women are dying from unsafe back-alley abortions, that’s on you, America.

    Campus Activism Website

This is a great activism site: http://www.campusactivism.org

This interactive website has tools for progressive student activists. We built it, but you must provide the site’s content. You can use it to start a campaign, share activism resources, publicize events, and build networks. Or you can join an existing campaign, get resources, learn about upcoming activist events, and let people find you.

Are you open minded, or uninformed and biased?

If you have any respect for equality and understanding and knowledge, please read this article about Debra Darvick:
    http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20040709.html

Ignorance and misinformation are the hardest enemys to fight, and a *little* information will always be a dangerous thing.

In the July 12th issue of Newsweek magazine (which you can read online here), Debra Darvick — a woman who believes she must have shamans ritually mutilate the penises of babies to appease her god — writes that those with piercings are disgusting and that she won’t interact with them because they make her “nearly blow her lunch”.
