Chew On This My Merry Men
As Mr. Martin, my mentor and art/history teacher at CHS would say, “Everything old is new again.”
“Naturally, the common people don’t want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy, or a facist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country.”

“everything old is new again” are words to live by. For instance, if you had read George Orwell’s novel 1984, the actions of the current administration would scare the poo out of you.
Lots of 1950′s era science fiction novels are very educational in this respect. In Heinlein’s BETWEEN PLANETS, the protagonist’s uncle dies while in the custody of the secret police. He is told that his uncle died of a “heart failure.” Suddenly he remembers his old biology teacher saying that in the end *all* forms of death can be described as heart failure.
Even if it was due to being tortured to death.

Too too true. I just read 1984 last November. It hit me hard and too close to home.
