Rogue-miniscence
Last week SmileyChris @ Webfroot posted seven “Smiley Games”– games he found that were both free and fun. Game #4 caught my eye in particular due to the fact that it was about a catagory of games he called “Roguelikes.”
Rogue is a game that is extremely close to my heart. It is due to my Uncle Winchell’s (aka Nyrath) guidance and help that I am a computer programmer. I don’t recall exactly who got us our TRS-80, but he definately got me interested in computers, and started me off with Qbasic when I started playing around with DOS on our 486. The program he gave me to mess around with: Rogue.
I used to play with Rogue for hours on end, tweaking the code, learning commands, and breaking stuff. It was my first contact with programming and really sparked my interest. I’d all but forgotten about Rogue and its many clones (most notably Nethack) until I read that post today.
Anyway, I just thought I’d share that with you all, and tell you to go check out the 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 smiley games at Webfroot.

Ha! It worked. When I was in college I was doing lackluster in my programming classes, until I found a copy of Star Trek written in BASIC. Then I quickly became an expert, learning how to tweek the code.
I figured that trick would work on you as well. Afterwards one quickly notices the nice jobs available for one with programming skills.
