A moment with Tom
I’m being lazy and can’t decide exactly how to implement some new interface ideas for the site. Please be patient, I have a good excuse, I’ve been playing fable for the past week for at least 4 hours a day. When I’m through milking it for everything it offers, I’ll get back to work.
Anyway, heres a rare personal life update:
I’ve been having a blast in my electronics class. I’m learning all about the stuff my great grandfather loved. I can now see why he did, its so cool.
I just finished rearanging our study yet again. Its a bad habbit really, but I can’t help myself. I never stay satisfied with one layout for very long, as you can see by this site, ever in upheaval. From a design standpoint I’m not sure if thats a good attribute or not, as long as I actually fully implement a layout that is, heh.
Amme, Jess, Zach and I have gone swimming a few times this past week. Zach can’t really swim, but we’ve progressed him from sinking within a few seconds to being able to float on his back indefinately. I’m not a very good teacher, its so intuitive to me because I spend every day of my summers as a child swimming in my grandmother’s pool. We were so lucky. Swimming isn’t nearly as fun as climbing, but it is an amazing workout, great for losing weight!
Zach and I got our hands on some great new rope for a great deal and went urban abseiling a few weeks ago, though its getting too cold to now, bummer. We’ve also all gone to Acadia National Park a few times to go bouldering. Its soooooo much more fun on real rock, and it grips your fingers and shoes so much better than plastic. I also blew my Mad Rock Mugens out so I got a pair of La Sportiva Cobra slip-lasted shoes that give me a bit more support, but less grippy rubber :(
Hmm I’m hungry…

I remember the electronic percentile dice I made for my Dungeons and Dragon’s campaign. It had a 555 time or a transisor-capacitor section that made several hundred pulses a second, a pair of decade counter chips to count them, a pair of seven-segment display chips, and two seven segment digital displays.
You’d turn it on, the display would blur, then when you hit the freeze button it would stop on the last two digit number. It was harder to use than a pair of icoscahedal dice but it was much cooler.
I got the circuits from the Radio Shack blue book of electronic projects. The chips were mounted on a strip of perf board and wire wrapped (which is so much easier than the old stick-and-solder method). The board was mounted on a black box with the battery and switches, components out so it looked all high-tech and electronic.

I have a mental image of poor Zach trying to stay afloat (sorry Zach!). He’s so graceful climbing up a rock wall. Don’t let him drown! Hey, Thomas, it’s Christmas wish list time again. Give me some ideas, including stocking stuffers. You are very hard to buy for! Luv u–Mom
